The most important thing to learn when playing poker in best online poker sites is which starting hands are worth staying in with and which one you should fold. Deciding whether the two dealt cards you are dealt with first are playable or not is the most important decision in every hand as you have to be in it to win the game.  You can’t lose the money that you haven’t bet. As the two-hole or pocket cards are the only things that will make the hand worse or better than other players, it is important that they are good strong cards.

  • The 10 worst starting hands 

Play the 10 best cards and always fold the worst hands.  By doing this you will improve your results. It is important to have a good hand selection as it prevents you from entering pots with sub-standard hands which can lead you losing money in the game. 

If you want to succeed as a good poker player, you need to vary your starting hand selection standards depending on the position. Read about understanding positions if it is a new concept to you. It is important as you need to tighten up the standards in early position like the blinds and can loosen up the standards in late position like sitting on the button. Here’s a guide to what Holdem starting hands to play in different positions:

Only play in early position:

  • High pairs: Ace-Ace, King-King, Queen-Queen, Jack-Jack 

  • High suited cards: Ace-King, Ace-Queen, King-Queen, Ace-Jack, King-Jack, Queen-Jack, Jack-10

  • High Unsuited Cards: Ace-King, Ace-Queen, King-Queen

Only play in middle position:

  • High Suited Cards: Ace-10, King-10, Queen-10

  • High Unsuited Cards: Ace-Jack, Ace-10, King-Jack, etc.

  • Middle Pairs: 10-10, 9-9, 8-8

Only play in middle position:

  • Suited connectors, such as 9-10, 7-8, etc.

  • Small pairs all the way down to 2s

  • Ace-littles: A-8, A-6

Remember just because some players can play ace-little in late position, doesn’t mean you should always play. None of the hands that we added for later or middle position should be played if there is a larger raise before you act to act and should be tossed if there is are two raises in front of you. The reason the hands are more playable in late positions is precise as you will have more information about what others are going to do and if everyone is folding or calling. There is a better chance that one of the second best hands above is the best hand at the table. 

This is just a rough guide and it helps to be able to read the basic of poker tells and pay attention to other players’ styles like how they play loose, tight, aggressive etc. so you can guess what hands you might be up against.  If you stick to this what to hold and which one to fold, your profits should grow.
